What is a Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is a private insurance alternative with the help from subsidies provided by the government so that the insurance company can design network based plans at a various premiums.

These plans are normally designed similar to work group plans with copays and coinsurance throughout the plans as a form of cost share that the client would assume when joining one of these plans. Most plans may offer additional benefits at no additional cost to you.

So let's take a closer look at Medicare Advantage Plans.

Medicare Advantage Upside:

  1. It’s convenient to have a single plan for everything.

  2. The plan has hospital insurance and medical insurance as well as emergency and urgent care through their networks.

  3. Most plans also include prescription drug coverage.

  4. Your eligibility isn’t affected by health or financial status.

  5. Many plans may cover additional benefits.

  6. Premiums vary.

Medicare Advantage Down Side:

  1. The private plans are profit-driven. So they aim to keep costs low to stay in business. You will be trusting your critical care to a private alternative, not the government system. These are not Original Medicare.

  2. You may receive similar benefits of Original Medicare, but you are subject to prior authorizations which are known for causing delays for coverage.

  3. You’re restricted to network doctors and hospitals (unless it’s an emergency). A typical network is based on the area you live, think county specific.

  4. Plan premiums and copays could change from year to year.

  5. Difficult to switch to Medigap later on due to health issues that may develop.

  6. Plan benefits can also change from year to year.

  7. You’re subject to higher limits than if you had a supplement and Original Medicare. Costs at tend to range from $3,400-$11,400 before plans starts covering 100%.

  8. Access to world-class facilities are extremely limited, such as MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic, John Hopkins, and other top facilities for serious illnesses.
